Data Erasure and Media Destruction FAQ
When do I need data erasure or media destruction?
Deleting files or performing an ordinary format does not guarantee that sensitive data has been cleared to the required standard. Before reusing, reselling or disposing of a storage device, choose a suitable method based on its media, condition, confidentiality requirements and intended reuse. Files no longer being visible is not sufficient evidence that treatment is complete.

Can the device be reused after treatment?
This depends on the media, method and device condition. Suitable software or built-in device erasure functions may allow reuse; physical destruction prevents reuse. The same method should not be assumed suitable for every storage device.
Degaussing applies only to compatible magnetic media, such as magnetic hard drives and tapes. Reuse depends on the media and treatment; do not assume a degaussed hard drive will remain usable. Degaussing does not apply to SSDs, USB flash drives or SD memory cards. These require another suitable method based on their characteristics and supported features.
Check completion and results before deciding whether the required outcome has been achieved and whether the media is suitable for reuse or disposal. A fixed treatment time alone does not guarantee the outcome.
