HD-3XTL
3 Second Degausser
Fast, high-volume, workhorse. In only 3 seconds, the compact and automatic HD-3XTL degausser, with 10,000 gauss and an oversized media slot, will completely and permanently erase all data contained on high-coercivity (magnetic) hard drives and tape up to 1.7″ in height. Includes SCAN-1X verification software and scanner voucher to create a media destruction report as you degauss.
Destroy Data Fast and Safely:
- Inserting the media into the media slot automatically initiates the degauss cycle.
- 3 seconds later, the media is degaussed.
- To save precious time, pre-charging begins immediately as the degaussed media is released down the slide.
- Turning off the HD-3XTL releases any pre-charged energy for safe storage.
Why Degaussing is Important: Data is Gone Forever
Degaussing, the removal of all data from hard drives and tape media through demagnetizing, provides the most secure method of data elimination recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA). Degaussing takes only seconds to eliminate all data on any size hard drive. When you degauss your drive, you have performed the most secure method of data destruction. Degaussing provides complete protection for your organization.

HD-3XTL Erasure Verification
Built-in field checker: Garner’s degaussers have built-in field verification systems. On-board diagnostics confirm the magnetic field strength of every cycle, ensuring complete erasure every time.
LCD display: Provides the numerical value of gauss field strength to verify erasure, as well as cycle count, job count, and diagnostics.
SCAN-1X Media Destruction Report software and scanner voucher included: Creates media destruction reports with date, time, user ID, serial number, and verification of each cycle.
IRONCLAD Integrated Auditing System (option): Create the ultimate proof-of-erasure and destruction reports. Combine the HD-3XTL degausser with Garner’s exclusive IRONCLAD® Erasure Verification with JPG Image Capture System. IRONCLAD creates a Certificate of Erasure & Destruction Report by compiling user, media, and diagnostic data from the HD-3XTL degausser and the PD-5 hard drive destroyer for auditing purposes.
Information Security Best Practices: Degauss Before You Destroy
Physical destruction (i.e., shredding, crushing, piercing, bending) of hard drives without first being degaussed leaves data behind. In fact, a shredded but un-degaussed 2 mm² hard drive fragment can contain the equivalent of approximately 504,000 pages of paper containing sensitive and confidential data.
The 10,000 gauss field of the Garner HD-3XTL degausser magnetically erases all data on hard drives making them safe and secure for disposal. Every hard drive must be degaussed before shredding, crushing, or disposal to ensure the data is unrecoverable.
Although physical destruction of a hard drive is not necessary after the drive has been degaussed, physically damaging the hard drive casing and bending the disk platters provides visual confirmation that the hard drive has been securely processed; discourages unscrupulous (but fruitless) attempts to retrieve data from the drive; and indicates the drive is ready to leave the controlled environment for disposal.
Note: Solid-state media cannot be degaussed. Physical destruction of the media with the SSD-1 solid-state destroyer is recommended before the media leaving its secure environment.
Degauss vs. Overwrite
Overwriting is a method where a random pattern of usually “1” and “0” is written to every part of the drive, frequently three times, to obliterate the underlying data. The advantage of this method is the drive can be re-used. The disadvantages are: it takes a skilled operator to ensure the overwriting is done correctly; non-functioning sectors of the hard drive cannot be overwritten allowing data to remain on the drive; it takes a considerable amount of time-hours, and therefore electricity; and it is not regarded as failsafe, or permissible for the highest data security standards such as the NSA, CIA, or DoD.
Degaussing is the process of exposing the media to a strong magnetic field of sufficient strength to magnetically destroy the data. The advantages of degaussing are: a skilled operator is not required to operate a degausser; the magnetic field destroys all the data on the drive in approximately 1/10 of a second regardless of whether the drive is functioning or non-functioning, Degaussing is recognized by the NSA and DoD as an appropriate method of secure data destruction. The disadvantage of degaussing is the hard drive cannot be re-used.
After degaussing, the data on a degaussed hard drive simply no longer exists.
